01 - SPACING & SPEED

Learn how spacing between movements affects the speed of an animated object.

In animation, spacing means how far an object moves between each picture you take. If the object moves a big distance between pictures, it will look like it’s moving fast when the animation plays. If it moves only a little bit between pictures, it will look slow. When it moves a medium amount, it will look like it’s moving at a normal speed. Knowing how to control spacing helps you make the animation’s timing and speed feel just right, making it look more real.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  1. Understand spacing and speed in animation.

  2. Identify how spacing affects the speed of movement.

  3. Apply spacing techniques to control the speed of an animated object.

  4. Create animations showing fast, medium, and slow speeds.

Key Concepts:

  • Large spacing: When played back, the object moves fast.

  • Medium spacing: When played back, the object moves at a normal speed.

  • Small spacing: When played back, the object moves very slowly.

Activity:

  1. Download the attached worksheet.

  2. Load the worksheet into Stop Motion Studio as a guide.

  3. Grab some plasticine and shape it into a ball.

  4. Following the guide in Stop Motion Studio, move the ball across each diagram.

  5. Play back your animation to see how distance affects speed.

Materials Needed:

  • Stop Motion Studio app

  • Attached spacing and speed worksheet

  • Plasticine
